Cataract Surgery
Modern cataract removal is now done on a comfortable outpatient basis and normally takes less than 15 minutes to complete. Outpatient care means that you no longer have to enter a hospital to have your cataracts removed. This reduces patient costs, and allows you to leave the outpatient surgery facility quickly and recover safely in the comfort of your own home after surgery. Your total time at the facility for cataract removal is usually two to three hours.
Topical anesthesia is a recent and important advance in technique, which is not widely available. This treatment allows for complete comfort and the most rapid vision recovery. Without injections around the eye nor an unnecessary patch, most patients notice improved vision as they leave the suite following cataract removal.
Given modern advances in cataract removal now available, cataract treatment has become one of the most common and most successful surgical procedures performed in all of medicine today.
New technology in intraocular lenses (IOL's) now allows for the correction of presbyopia and astigmatism through refractive lens exchange. This procedure is generally done in conjunction with cataract removal. Until recently, it was not possible to give patients the ability to alter their focus for distance and near objects.
