LASIK and PRK
Refractive surgery includes procedures that are designed to eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contacts. Currently the most successful techniques take advantage of advanced U.S. Excimer Laser technology; LASIK, PRK. These techniques change the curvature of the cornea and thus shift the focus onto the retina. These laser procedures have been most successful in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Dr Michael Gilbert advanced the FDA research of the VISX Excimer laser while at the Wilmer Institute of Johns Hopkins University in the late 1980s. His experience with the Excimer laser precedes its availability in the Northwest. Dr. Gilbert has published widely on refractive surgery including the Excimer laser.
